If you have any kind of LGBT event going on at all in February we will add it. Regular events such as choir rehearsals, walks, talks or shows will also have a listing so that anyone can take the brochure, check here or http://zhooshbrighton.co.uk/ all year round for things to do.
This is a work in progress and this is just a holding page at the moment but please feel free to email (hello@brightonlgbt-historymonth.co.uk) or call Jane on 07711 309893
Who are 'we'? We are Jane Wrin and Zhoosh.
Why are we doing this? LGBT History Month is often something of an non-event and yet there are usually many choices of individual events that have not been linked or even brought together under one cover. So we are hoping to remedy this. The idea came about when I was trying to find things to do last February and found that I had to call people, browse several sites, or go to pubs to find flyers.
Pride is the main LGBT focus for this and most cities. The activities around Pride are fun and it can be a trememdous weekend but recent debates have revelaed, among other things that we are a very diverse section of society and we want to do many things but we also want to keep it local. This all about local. It will make not a bean and any money it costs will come out of our own pockets. If anyone wants to throw a few pennies this way we won't say no and Susan will soon announce a sponsor for the printing costs.
How can you help? Easy - just let us know of any events you know are going on and we will contact the people involved.
There is no hidden agenda. This is for you guys out there to keep in touch, support and meet each other. It also for those who know little about the LGBT community to see that we are not just about 1 weekend a year, we do more than drink, dance and stay up all night.
More to follow - at the moment this is just a list but as dates and venue details come in this will grow and grow and grow!

Who did Edward VII call ‘the most remarkable woman in the kingdom’? Which romantic hero spent a last summer of youth in Brighton? Whose diary has been called ‘The Rosetta Stone of lesbian history’? What’s the cross-gender connection between Brighton and the Venezuelan Revolution? Why has Brighton become such an LGBT-friendly city?

Us –versus- Them? Us as them? I am all of them.

The event’s focus is positive and constructive, to look at innovative ways of challenging extreme & prejudiced views in all minority communities (both faith and non-faith, including LGBT) and ways of building bridges and allies between communities in a time when there have been high profile legal challenges and clashes around the various faith and LGBT equalities agendas.

A young man talks about love and loss in this poetic and political bedtime story.
Moving and funny in equal measure, this contemporary reworking of the ancient Song of Songs is the second part of Risking Enchantment’s The Well & Badly Loved trilogy. The trilogy explores loss and desire within the context of a rapidly changing world and can be seen at London’s Ovalhouse theatre in March 2012: www.ovalhouse.com
This is where we have always lived – in the waiting, the potential, between the cracks, love letters lost in a library book, messages through time. What do you remember?
“It’s amazingly tender; even when it takes you into the sadder parts of the affair it’s tender, piercingly and drowningly, and drummed all through with sex.” Nick Campbell (www.leaf-pile.blogspot.com)
Formed in 2008, Risking Enchantment is a theatre company dedicated to exploring and extending the possibilities of theatre art through collaborative effort. We want to touch people:www.riskingenchantment.com

After the Oxford Brookes Christian Union’s talk on ‘Homosexuality and the Bible’ in2005 the Brookes LGBT society felt obliged to put the other side of the argument across to their fellow students but needed a larger audience to attract a well known panel of speakers. This coupled with Oxford moving their pride to July, when the students had gone home, resulted in National Student Pride!
2012is the biggest change to Student Pride in recent years, we are moving our venue to the Brighton Dome, the grade 1 listed concert and conference centre in the Centre of Brighton. This will allow the Under 18’s to attend the daytime festival for the first time, with FE students being a large part of the NUS membership this is an important step forward. The club night will also be at the Brighton Dome in the Corn Exchange, doubling our numbers to 1200 students for the club.
Why do we need National Student Pride?University and College is often the first time people come out and although there are many LGBT students who are comfortable with who they are, there are also a lot of students who are struggling to come to terms with their sexuality. This is why we at Student Pride believe it is important to have a presence on university campuses not only for them but also for the rest of our university communities, to see yes we are here and yes it is normal.
